Community Support Services

Community Support Service WorkerCommunity SupportService is the process of assessing the skills of survivors, and facilitating the learning of compensatory strategies to optimize independence and promote socially appropriate behavior. Brain Injury Services of SWVA's Community Support Service program is designed to work in conjunction with Case Management. The program provides intensive, one-to-one training on issues related to activities of daily living, increased independence, and community integration.

Areas which are frequently the focus of Community Support Service Training include:

  • Communication and Social Skills
  • Compensatory Strategies
  • Financial Management
  • Household Management
  • Organization and Scheduling
  • Personal/Self Care
  • Use of Technology as an Assistive Device

The Community Support Service Specialist works with clients on a temporary, short-term basis. Initially the Specialist may meet with a client several times a week. Services gradually decrease to once a week, then once a month, as the client masters specific strategies and techniques to function as independently as possible.
